This being human can be a bother,

every morning is so new

Some days it’s a joy, a misery, a malice

some fleeting alertness comes

as an unforeseen caller

We welcome and entertain them all!

even when it is nothing but grief,

who cruelly sweep our houses

empty of stuff

still, treat each visitor honorably.

They may be clearing you out

for some new pleasure in the future.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,

meet them at the door laughing,

and invite them in.

Be indebted for whoever comes,

because each has been sent

as a guide from beyond.

Each from those that have gone before us.
