My name is Don and I am a husband, father, author and a motivator. I am a free lance writer and have written off and on ever since I can remember. My early adult life I was directed by the Universe to do other things.
When I got our of high-school I went into the Marine Corps. I wanted to go to college for journalism but did not want my parents to foot the bill so I figured that this would be my best option. After 4 years of the Marines and school I got my first job writing with the L.A. Times as an Obituary Editor. I guess you can’t really call that writing but hey, it was a job and with a paper, right?
After about 6 months of eating ramen noodles and potato soup I decided I would fair better back in Houston, Texas, my home. I was able to get a job with one of the two city papers, The Houston Post. I was with them doing about whatever they wanted me to do and I enjoyed every second of it. I was about 23 at the time.
One day when I pulled into work I noticed a crowd our front and that the doors were locked. The paper had been shut down. some had notifications that they would be working for the competitor paper, The Houston Chronicle. Of course I was not know enough and was not among the list.
“Well what do I do now”, I thought. I had to do something and realized that it would not be in writing as I had a family to take care of. I applied at every place I could. We live in a highly industrial area so before long I was working with ExxonMobil. I stayed there for almost 17 years, dreaming of writing, Yes, I would write but not for anything other than myself and the internet was not yet progressed to a point where I could use it like we do today.
As the years went by I became good at what I did in the refining and chemical industry and moved two more times to BP and then to Bayer MaterialScience. This last company has afforded me the time I need to write as well as take care of family and still do very well at what I do for them, developing and programming management systems.
Last year I published my first book and have been complimenting it with my blog writing. I am currently writing two new books that will be out at the end of this year.
I write more for myself first when I write and based on my life and my experiences in the hopes that what I share can in some way touch each of you that visit me here.
Please come back often as I try to post twice a day. Feel free to comment and critique good or bad. That’s how we learn. I look so forward to our interactions with one another and from learning from each of you.
